According to the board, the bursary scheme is aimed at supporting students of Delta State origin and encouraging them to remain focused on their academic pursuits. The Delta State Bursary and Scholarship Board has announced that disbursement of the 2024/2025 Students Special Assistance Scheme, popularly known as the bursary award, will commence on March 10, 2026. In a public service announcement issued on Thursday in Asaba, the board said the payment would be made strictly to eligible Delta State students currently enrolled in tertiary institutions across Nigeria who successfully completed the required registration and verification processes. The announcement was signed by the Executive Secretary of the board, Dr. Godfrey O. Enita. According to the board, the bursary scheme is aimed at supporting students of Delta State origin and encouraging them to remain focused on their academic pursuits. "The Delta State Bursary and Scholarship Board is pleased to inform the general public, especially students of Delta State origin currently enrolled in tertiary institutions across Nigeria, that disbursement for the 2024/2025 Students Special Assistance Scheme (Bursary Award) will commence on 10th March 2026," the statement said. It added that the payment would only be made to students who completed all the required registration and verification procedures for the programme. The board also expressed appreciation to Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, for what it described as his commitment to the welfare of students in the state and his administration's emphasis on education under the M.O.R.E Agenda. "The Board expresses profound appreciation to the Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori, for his unwavering commitment to the welfare of Delta State students and for strengthening educational development as a key pillar of the M.O.R.E Agenda," the statement added. The board further encouraged beneficiaries to maintain academic excellence and uphold the reputation of Delta State in their respective institutions. The announcement comes amid allegations by some Delta State students who claimed that a multi-million naira fraud had affected the bursary scheme. SaharaReporters had earlier reported that pandemonium was brewing among indigenous students of Delta State following allegations of a multi-million-naira fraud allegedly perpetrated by state government officials through the state's bursary scheme. Investigation by SaharaReporters revealed that since February 2025, the Delta State Bursary and Scholarship Board has allegedly collected a mandatory N800 registration fee from thousands of students nationwide, promising a bursary payout of N19,500. However, over a year after the collection began, a vast majority of the applicants are yet to receive a kobo, leading to accusations that the government used the scheme as a "revenue-generating trap" rather than a welfare programme. The crisis SaharaReporters had reported reached a boiling point after the state government took to its official media platforms to announce that the disbursement of the 2024/2025 bursary had commenced on February 13.
