March 06, (THEWILL) -- A member of the United States House of Representatives, Riley Moore, has raised serious concerns over escalating attacks on Christians in Nigeria, citing recent incidents including the burning of St. Mary's Catholic Cathedral in Wukari, Taraba State, and insurgent violence in the northeast. Moore made the remarks on Friday via a series of posts on his X account, opening with a biblical reference to highlight the plight of persecuted Christians. "Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. At a time like this, there is no greater comfort than the words of our Lord. Christians in Nigeria continue to be attacked for their faith. Recently, terrorists burned down St. Mary's Cathedral in Wukari", he wrote. Moore emphasised that the United States has designated Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern, signalling the gravity of the situation regarding religious freedom. "The United States has declared Nigeria a Country of Particular Concern and we won't stand idly by as Christians continue to face this violence", he said. Moore also highlighted reports of insurgent attacks in northeastern Nigeria, citing claims by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and reposting analysis from security expert Brant Philip. According to the report, militants attacked Kirshinga, killing 27 Christians, burning 10 houses, and demanding that survivors either pay the jizyah tax, convert to Islam, or face death. Philip's analysis, reposted by Moore, stated that ISWAP openly issued threats against Christian communities in the northeast, describing the ultimatum as a "fair deal" for residents of the affected area. "Christians continue to be explicitly targeted for their faith in Nigeria. ISIS West Africa is slaughtering Christians and telling other Christians they must convert or die. In our report to the White House, we made it clear that increased American support is contingent on the Nigerian government doing more to defend Christians. Now is the time for Abuja to step up", Moore added. Source: https://thewillnews.com/us-lawmaker-moore-flags-threats-to-christians-amid-iswap-attacks-in-northeast-nigeria/
