In the statement on Friday, he noted that attack, which occurred in Ngoshe led to the "abduction of more than 100 residents, raising fresh concerns over the safety of civilians in communities affected by insurgency in Borno State and across the wider northeastern region." Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has condemned the recent attack by suspected terrorists on a military base and an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Ngoshe, in Gwoza Local Government Area, describing the incident as deeply troubling and a reflection of the worsening security situation in the country. In the statement on Friday, he noted that attack, which occurred in Ngoshe led to the "abduction of more than 100 residents, raising fresh concerns over the safety of civilians in communities affected by insurgency in Borno State and across the wider northeastern region." In a further reaction to the development, Abubakar expressed alarm over the scale of the incident and criticised what he described as the Federal Government's response to the growing wave of violent attacks. "The attack by suspected terrorists on a military base and an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Ngoshe, Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, in which over 100 citizens were abducted, is deeply troubling," he said. The former vice president also voiced concern over what he characterised as a pattern of inadequate responses to recurring security breaches in several parts of the country. "Even more disturbing is the apparent indifference of the Federal Government to this incident and to many similar attacks before it," he stated. According to him, the continued wave of killings and violent assaults across Nigeria has gradually created a sense of numbness among both government officials and the public. "The upsurge in violence and killings has become so widespread across the country that both government and society seem to have grown numb to the bloodshed resulting from these assaults," Abubakar said. He further criticised the current administration, arguing that it appears to be struggling to maintain control of the security situation while allegedly focusing attention on political rivalries. "It is unfortunate that the current Federal Government appears to be losing its grip on the fight against terrorism and violent attacks. Instead, it seems more focused on unleashing intense pressure against political opponents and enabling self-serving ethnic militia groups," he said. Abubakar also expressed disappointment over what he described as the priorities of those responsible for internal security and the leadership of the ruling party, accusing them of concentrating on political power while citizens continue to face deadly threats. "It is disheartening that those responsible for internal security, along with the elite of the ruling party, remain preoccupied with consolidating power, while vulnerable civilians and servicemen are being killed," he added. While extending sympathy to the families affected by the incident, the former vice president emphasised the need for stronger empathy and decisive action from the government to address the escalating insecurity. "While I sympathise with the families of the victims of this Ngoshe attack, I must express strong indignation at the government's evident lack of empathy towards the victims of these increasingly frequent assaults," he said. The attack in Ngoshe has added to growing concerns about security challenges in Nigeria's northeast, where communities continue to grapple with the activities of insurgent groups despite years of military operations aimed at restoring stability to the region. Earlier, SaharaReporters reported that a yet-to-be-ascertained number of persons, including soldiers, were killed by militants of the Islamic State-backed faction of Boko Haram, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), formerly known as Jamā'at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da'wah wa'l-Jihād, in Borno state. Multiple security sources told SaharaReporters that Ngoshe town, under Gwoza Local Government Area of the state, came under highly coordinated and simultaneous attacks around 4am on Wednesday, and the terrorists operated till daybreak. https://x.com/atiku/status/2029899607698702718?s=20 During the incident, the militants invaded a military base, 82 Div TF Battalion under 26 BDE, and launched an assault on a camp for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the community. A source added that the terrorists also ransacked the community, looking for soldiers they claimed may be hiding. The gunmen also burnt armoured tanks and military vehicles and made away with unquantifiable ammunition.
