The confirmation came on Friday through a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, who announced that the president had approved the postings of 31 career ambassadors and 34 non-career ambassadors to various countries and international missions, including the United Nations. The Nigerian presidency has confirmed an earlier report by SaharaReporters regarding the approval of ambassadorial postings by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, with several prominent political figures assigned to key diplomatic missions across the world. The confirmation came on Friday through a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, who announced that the president had approved the postings of 31 career ambassadors and 34 non-career ambassadors to various countries and international missions, including the United Nations. The ambassadorial nominees were earlier confirmed by the Nigerian Senate in December. Among the controversial and high-profile postings is former presidential aide Reno Omokri, who has been appointed ambassador to Mexico, while former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode has been posted to Germany. Former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mahmood Yakubu, was also named among the non-career ambassadors and posted to Qatar. Other notable appointments include former Akwa Ibom military governor Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas to the Philippines, former Interior Minister Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau to China, and businessman-politician Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations. Also on the list are former Minister of Health Isaac Folorunso Adewole posted to Canada, former Lagos Deputy Governor Olufemi Pedro assigned to Australia, and former National Intelligence Agency boss Ayodele Oke posted to France. According to the presidency, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already secured agrément from the United Kingdom for Ambassador-designate Aminu Dalhatu, who will serve as Nigeria's High Commissioner to the UK. France has also granted agrément for Ambassador Ayo Oke. The ministry has formally notified the remaining countries of the 62 other ambassadorial nominations and requested agréments in line with international diplomatic procedures. President Tinubu also directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to immediately commence induction programmes for the ambassadors-designate and High Commissioners ahead of their deployment to diplomatic missions. Career diplomats also received new assignments to several countries including Côte d'Ivoire, Niger, São Tomé and Príncipe, Algeria, Burkina Faso, Egypt, Jamaica, Zambia, Mali, Equatorial Guinea, Lebanon, Italy, Mozambique, DR Congo, India, Senegal, Ghana, Ethiopia, Chad, the Netherlands, Morocco, Malaysia, Tanzania, Botswana, Iran, Kenya, Benin, Belgium, Switzerland, Namibia, Gabon, Sierra Leone, Sudan and Thailand. The new postings come after months of delay in appointing envoys, leaving several Nigerian missions abroad without substantive ambassadors since the recall of previous diplomats shortly after Tinubu assumed office in 2023.
