The Laguda Descendants Union has called for stronger family ties and greater national unity as it held its 11th Annual Ramadan Public Lecture in Lagos. The event, held on Friday, February 28, 2026, at the Abdulwahab Folawiyo Central Mosque, attracted family members, community leaders, religious scholars, and public office holders. With the theme "Strengthening Family Bonds and Community Unity in the Light of Ramadan" and "Ramadan as a Catalyst for National Unity and Moral Renewal in Nigeria," the gathering focused on the role of family cohesion and moral values in promoting societal stability. The programme began at 11 a.m. with the arrival of guests, opening prayer and Qur'anic recitation, followed by a welcome address by the Olori-Ebi, Alhaji Mifatah Bolaji Aare. Chairman of the union, Alhaji Bashiru Olade Lawal, in his remarks, stressed the importance of sustaining unity within families and the wider community, noting that strong family structures remain vital to social harmony. Delivering the main lecture titled "Ramadan as a Catalyst for National Unity and Moral Renewal in Nigeria," Ustadh Mustapha Yahaya, Chief Mufaseer of the Qur'anic Central Mosque, emphasised the need for unity in diversity in a multi-ethnic and multi-religious country like Nigeria. He urged Nigerians to imbibe virtues such as good morals, kindness, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence, noting that the lessons of Ramadan promote discipline, love, sacrifice, and collective responsibility. According to him, these values are essential for national development, adding that unity must begin within families and extend to the larger community. "When families are strong and united, society becomes more stable," he said. Speaking with journalists at the event, an elder of the Laguda family, Alhaji Abdurasheed Olarewaju Laguda, described the Laguda name as prominent in Lagos history, highlighting its contributions to the socio-cultural and political development of the state. He cited several public office holders from the family, including Fuad Kayode Laguda, who represents Surulere Constituency I in the House of Representatives of Nigeria. Laguda noted that the annual lecture is designed not only to unite members of the Laguda family but also to promote harmony and mutual understanding within the wider society. "Family is very important. When there is unity at home, it reflects in the community," he said, adding that the programme is not strictly religious but also social and community-based. Also speaking, Honourable Fuad Kayode Laguda, who represents Surulere Constituency I in the Federal House of Representatives, said the annual Ramadan lecture has been sustained for 11 consecutive years as a way of strengthening bonds among family members. According to him, unity within the family naturally extends to the community and ultimately the nation. "Ramadan is a season where we emphasise the fear and love of Allah. We must imbibe the values and lessons of Ramadan even after the fasting period," he said, praying for peace, unity, and prosperity in Nigeria. Another member of the Laguda family, Alhaja Mariam Lawal Laguda, also underscored the importance of family unity, describing it as a divine command. She expressed joy that despite differences, the Laguda family has maintained unity over the years. "For a nation to live in harmony, it starts from the family. The family is the smallest unit of the nation. If families are united, the nation will be united," she said, praying that God grants families the ability to live together in peace so the nation can grow stronger in unity. The event later featured donations, a vote of thanks, and closing prayers. Source: https://thenationonlineng.net/laguda-descendants-union-advocates-family-bonds-national-unity-at-ramadan-lecture/
