Residents and businesses in parts of northern Nigeria may experience reduced electricity supply after Kaduna Electric announced a decline in power distribution due to challenges affecting generation on the national grid. In a notice released on Sunday, the electricity distribution company explained that gas supply problems have limited the amount of power available for distribution, forcing the company to implement additional load shedding within its service areas. The power distributor said the shortfall is affecting customers throughout Kaduna Electric's franchise region, which includes Kaduna, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Zamfara states. Addressing the situation, the company reassured customers that steps are being taken within the power sector to improve electricity generation and stabilize supply. "We wish to inform you that we are currently experiencing a reduction in power supply across our franchise area due to gas supply constraints affecting power generation on the national grid," the statement read. "This situation has resulted in reduced power allocation and increased load shedding across our network." "We are, however, pleased to inform you that the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISQ) is actively working with relevant stakeholders in the power sector to ensure that gas supply to generation companies increases significantly, which will in turn improve power generation on the grid," the statement added. Kaduna Electric also said it remains in close contact with key players in the power sector as it tracks developments that could improve electricity supply to its customers. "On our part at Kaduna Electric, we remain in constant communication with the relevant stakeholders and are closely monitoring updates regarding improvements in generation and supply to our network." The company apologised to customers for the disruption and expressed appreciation for their patience while efforts continue to address the situation and restore more stable electricity supply. The announcement comes shortly after the Eko Electricity Distribution Company issued a separate notice to customers in Lagos State about a planned power interruption scheduled for Saturday, March 14. According to the notice, the outage -- expected to run from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. -- will enable contractors working for the Transmission Company of Nigeria to carry out maintenance and upgrade work designed to improve electricity service delivery.
