The Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has celebrated the strength and contribution of women in their homes and nation building as the world marks the International Women's Day (IWD). Obasa, the representative of Agege Constituency 2 since 2003, made this known in a statement issued to newsmen on Sunday. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the IWD is celebrated every March 8. Obasa, a third-term speaker, noted that the IWD was a special moment set aside globally to celebrate the invaluable contributions, strength, resilience, and achievements of women in all spheres of life. According to him, it is also a time to recognise the vital roles women continue to play in shaping families, building communities, nurturing future generations, and driving socio-economic development. He said women remain the backbone of homes and society, from the market women to professionals, entrepreneurs, teachers, caregivers, community leaders, and public servants. The speaker noted that their sacrifices, hard work, and dedication continue to inspire progress and unity in our communities. Obasa said: "As we celebrate this year's International Women's Day, I commend the resilience and determination of our mothers, sisters, and daughters. "They have continued to break barriers and contribute meaningfully to the growth and development of our society. "Your unwavering commitment to family values, education, peace, and community development remains a strong pillar of our collective progress. "The Nigerian women have consistently demonstrated courage, industry, and leadership, and our Nation is proud of your remarkable impact." Obasa said the celebration also served as a reminder of the importance of supporting policies, initiatives, and programmes that promote the empowerment, protection, and inclusion of women in governance, education, business, and leadership. The Speaker said a society that uplifts its women laid a strong foundation for sustainable development and prosperity. He, therefore, encouraged women to continue to be agents of positive change, role models to the younger generation, and strong partners in building a peaceful, progressive Nigeria.
