The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has reiterated its commitment to expanding women's participation in politics as Nigeria marks International Women's Day, insisting that women must move from the margins to the centre of leadership and decision-making. In a statement on Sunday in Abuja by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party, which said Nigerian women shoulder a significant share of the country's social and economic responsibilities but remain largely underrepresented in key national institutions, added that it remains the only political party in the country whose constitution explicitly reserves 40 per cent of party positions at all levels for women. According to the party, empowering women and ensuring their active participation in leadership is vital to deepening democracy in Nigeria. The ADC noted that its National Working Committee reflects a conscious effort to integrate women into the party's leadership structure. The party also paid tribute to Nigerian women whose contributions, it said, sustain the country across different sectors. It said women continue to play vital roles in homes, communities, and the economy, from mothers raising families to entrepreneurs driving markets, teachers educating the next generation, and health workers providing essential care. Despite these contributions, the party said women are still not adequately represented in positions where critical decisions about the nation's future are taken. The ADC maintained that within its structure, women are not merely participants but leaders involved in shaping the direction and decisions of the party. The party said any political movement committed to building a better Nigeria must recognise the strength and capacity of women across the country. It also stressed that Nigeria, with a population of over 200 million people, cannot achieve its full potential if half of its population remains underrepresented in political leadership. According to the party, Nigeria's democracy will become stronger when the country's institutions reflect the diversity, talent and resilience of its people. Marking the 2026 International Women's Day celebration, the ADC reaffirmed its commitment to promoting a political culture that empowers women to lead and participate fully in shaping the nation's future.
