The Chairman of the FCT Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Grace Ike, has called for greater investment and opportunities for women across all sectors of society, stressing that empowering women is key to building stronger institutions and communities. Ike made the call on Saturday in a statement to commemorate the 2026 edition of International Women's Day (IWD), celebrated globally on March 8. Reflecting on the theme of this year's celebration, "Give To Gain," she noted that when society intentionally invests in women through education, mentorship, leadership opportunities, and resources, the benefits extend far beyond individuals to families, communities, and nations. According to her, empowering women contributes to more inclusive institutions, stronger governance, and richer storytelling in the media profession. "For me, this year's celebration carries a deeply personal meaning," she said. "As the first female Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, I stand on the shoulders of many courageous women who broke barriers, challenged stereotypes, and refused to accept limitations placed on their dreams." She described her emergence as a testament to what becomes possible when women are allowed to lead, contribute, and excel. Ike also highlighted the growing impact of female journalists in Nigeria, noting that women in the profession have continued to demonstrate resilience, professionalism, and commitment to truth and public service. She said female journalists across the country are increasingly breaking new ground, covering challenging beats, shaping public discourse, and mentoring younger colleagues. While celebrating the achievements of women, the NUJ chairman emphasised that the occasion should go beyond recognition to concrete action. She called on media organisations and other institutions to deliberately create safe and supportive workplaces, expand leadership opportunities for women, and strengthen mentorship for young female journalists. Ike further referenced the global call by the United Nations for this year's celebration, themed "Rights" Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls," describes it as a reminder that achieving gender equality requires collective effort. She urged governments, institutions, media organisations, and communities to work together to dismantle barriers that limit women's advancement. The NUJ chairman also commended women within the union, the FCT media community, and across Nigeria for their dedication, courage, and contributions to national development. "Let us recommit ourselves to giving more opportunities, more support, more mentorship, and more recognition to women, because when women rise, journalism rises, our communities thrive, and our nation grows stronger," she said.
