The Nigeria Police Force has expanded its counter-terrorism architecture with the approval of new operational bases and the deployment of additional personnel, as part of efforts to strengthen national security and improve rapid response to emerging threats. The development follows the completion of a specialised training programme for officers of the Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU), aimed at enhancing their operational readiness in combating terrorism, banditry and other violent crimes across the country. The two-week training programme, which focused on Close Quarter Battle and Intelligence Analysis, was conducted in collaboration with the British High Commission in Nigeria through the Office of the Counter Terrorism Regional Coordinator for West Africa. According to a statement by Benjamin Hundeyin, Force Public Relations Officer Force Headquarters, Abuja, a total of 56 officers drawn from the Nigeria Police Force Counter Terrorism Unit participated in the exercise, where they were exposed to modern counter-terrorism tactics, intelligence gathering and analysis, as well as coordinated operational strategies for responding to evolving security threats. It noted that the closing ceremony of the programme was held at the Peacekeeping Conference Hall, Force Headquarters in Abuja, where officials highlighted the importance of strengthening law enforcement capacity in the face of rising security challenges. Ian Tyler , Lieutenant Colonel of the Office of the Counter Terrorism Regional Coordinator for West Africa at the British High Commission commended the officers for their dedication and professionalism throughout the training. He urged the participants to apply the knowledge and skills acquired during the programme in real operational situations to improve the effectiveness of counter-terrorism efforts. Tyler also reaffirmed the commitment of the British Government to sustaining cooperation with the Nigeria Police Force in strengthening security operations and counter-terrorism capabilities across the region. In his remarks, Olatunji Disu, Inspector-General of Police, IGP , represented by Akoh Gabriel, Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Counter Terrorism Unit, said the training reflects the commitment of the police leadership to continually upgrade the capacity of officers in response to evolving security threats. He expressed appreciation to the British Government for its continued support and strategic partnership in enhancing Nigeria's counter-terrorism framework. As part of broader measures to reinforce the country's counter-terrorism operations, the Inspector-General of Police has approved the establishment of new Counter Terrorism Unit bases in key strategic locations across the country. The new CTU bases will be located in Madagali in Adamawa State, Ikot Odo in Akpabuyo Local Government Area of Cross River State, and Ode-Remo in Ogun State. IGP said the new bases are intended to strengthen operational presence in vulnerable areas, improve intelligence coordination and enable faster response to security incidents. In addition, the IGP has approved the deployment of additional CTU personnel to strategic operational locations nationwide. The Nigeria Police Force said it remains committed to building stronger partnerships, improving operational capacity and deploying strategic resources to effectively combat terrorism and other emerging security threats.
