IWD: Amnesty International Task Bauchi Stakeholders On Defending Rigths Of Women, Girls - Independent Newspaper Nigeria

In Commemoration of the International Women's Day, a Non-governmental organization known as Amnesty International, Bauchi State Chapter has organised a community outreach for stakeholders in the state on the protection of the rigths of women and girls, particularly in regards to issues of gender-based violence (GBV) and increasing awareness of human rights. The Community outreach entitled " Justice for Her " held at the Mac Dallas event in center in Bauchi . Participants at the event included local Community leaders, journalists, Civil society Organizations, and Youth groups.The programme was designed to build capacity of the stakeholders for advocacy and promote accountability among authorities regarding the rights of women and girls. Speaking on the Overview of Amnesty International Nigeria and Human Rigths Advocacy, the Bauchi State Coordinator of Amnesty International , Amina Isah Ibrahim said that the programme was aimed at educating stakeholders on the need to protect the rigths of women and girls, identify gaps in regards to issues of Gender Based Violence and come up with possible solutions that will address factors militating against rigths of women and girls in the society. She said that Amnesty International is a global movement aimed at conducting research and taking action to prevent and end grave human rights abuses, holding violators accountable, and securing rights for all in line with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. "We organized this programme to commemorate the International Women's day 2026 basically to bring men, women, young girls, traditional leaders and the media together to celebrate Women and to have discussions in order to find out the gaps that are available so that we can come up with solutions to see how every young girl and woman can have access to justice and equal treatment as human beings" " I think there have not been a lot engagements, especially for communities in Bauchi, most of the communities that we engaged for this programme, this is the first time that most of them are attending an event like this and I think this is a platform for us to improve on organising more events .Most of the young girls that are here today, this is the first time they are hearing things like this, about their rigths" She said Speaking on "Understanding Women's Rights and Legal Protection , a legal Practitioner, Barrister Hamza Ibrahim Yashi said that one major issue that women face in regards to the violation of their rigths is discrimination in some aspects of life such as working environments, politics or their day to day activities, stressing that the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantees the fundamental rigths of all citizens of the country irrespective of religion, sex or status. According to him, some of the laws available to defend victims of Gender Base Violence are Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, 2015 (VAPP), Criminal Code Act and Penal Code, African Charter of People's Rigths, Child Rigth Act 2003 and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999): Chapter IV (Sections 33-46) which guarantees fundamental rights, including the right to life, the right to dignity of the human person, and freedom from torture, inhuman, or degrading treatment. A traditional leader, Murtala Ibrahim said that the programme was timely considering the fact that the rigths of many women and girls are being violated in the society and relegated to the background. He urged stakeholders and government at all levels to defend the rigths of women and girls by ensuring the enforcement of relevant laws that protect them from violence, intimidation, discrimination amongst others.
