The Grassroots Center for Rights & Civic Orientation(GRACO ),has called for increased investment in Nigerian women, saying empowering them remains key to sustainable development and inclusive governance. The organisation made the call on Sunday as the world marked the International Women's Day 2026. In a statement, the Executive Director of GRACO, Armsfree Ajanaku, said this year's theme, "Give to Gain," underscores the need for societies to invest in women through education, skills development and access to opportunities. He noted that when women are empowered and supported with resources, communities record faster development and stronger social progress. Ajanaku, however, lamented that Nigeria still lags behind global benchmarks on women's empowerment and participation in political, social and economic processes. According to him, despite the immense contributions of women in shaping families, institutions and communities, several structural barriers and societal norms continue to hinder their advancement. He said the uneven political playing field at both grassroots and national levels continues to limit women's representation in governance. The GRACO boss also expressed concern over the slow progress in implementing reforms such as the Special Legislative Seats for Women Bill and the Reserved Seats for Women Bill 1349. He added that the increasing monetisation of politics, gendered disinformation, violation of digital rights and technology-driven gender-based violence have further discouraged women from active participation in politics. Ajanaku stressed that the commemoration of International Women's Day should not only celebrate achievements but also serve as a reminder of the need to create environments where women can fully participate in social, economic and civic life. He said expanding access to education, promoting women's leadership and strengthening opportunities for participation in public life remain critical to building resilient societies. "Women's political, social and economic advancement strengthens communities and promotes inclusive governance systems," he said. He added that when women are allowed to contribute their ideas and leadership, institutions become more responsive while development outcomes become more sustainable. The group therefore urged governments, civil society organisations, development partners and community leaders to intensify efforts towards programmes that expand opportunities for women across the country. GRACO also reaffirmed its commitment to promoting civic awareness and supporting initiatives that advance women's rights in the context of national development.
