Police Sharpen Counter-Terror Skills, Deploy New CTU Base The Nigeria Police Force has intensified efforts to tackle terrorism and other violent crimes with a specialised training programme aimed at boosting the operational capacity of officers in its Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU). The training, organised in partnership with the British High Commission in Nigeria, was implemented through the Office of the Counter Terrorism Regional Coordinator for West Africa as part of ongoing collaboration to strengthen Nigeria's response to terrorism, banditry and other security threats. According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, the two-week programme focused on Close Quarter Battle techniques and intelligence analysis to enhance the preparedness of CTU personnel. A total of 56 officers drawn from the unit participated in the training, where they were exposed to modern counter-terrorism tactics, intelligence gathering and analysis, as well as operational strategies designed to improve coordinated responses to emerging threats. At the closing ceremony held at the Peacekeeping Conference Hall, Force Headquarters in Abuja, Ian Tyler of the Office of the Counter Terrorism Regional Coordinator for West Africa praised the participants for their professionalism and dedication during the programme. He urged the officers to apply the knowledge gained in the field and reaffirmed the British Government's commitment to strengthening cooperation with the Nigeria Police in the fight against terrorism across the region. In his remarks, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, represented by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the CTU, Akoh Gabriel, said the training reflects the determination of the police leadership to continually upgrade the operational capabilities of officers confronting evolving security threats. He also commended the British Government for its sustained partnership and strategic support in strengthening the country's counter-terrorism efforts. As part of broader measures to reinforce the national counter-terrorism framework, the police chief has approved the establishment of additional CTU bases in Madagali, Ikot Odo, and Ode‑Remo. The move will also see the deployment of more CTU personnel to key operational locations nationwide in order to strengthen rapid response capability and improve security coverage. The Nigeria Police Force said it remains committed to expanding strategic partnerships, strengthening operational capacity and deploying necessary resources to counter terrorism and other emerging threats across the country.
