CAF confirmed that the tournament, initially scheduled to run from March 17 to April 3 in Morocco, will now take place between July 25 and August 16. Plumptre voiced frustration over the late change, suggesting such a situation would be unlikely in other competitions. "It just wouldn't happen for other tournaments in women's football, especially in men's football," she told the BBC. CAF have also yet to confirm whether Morocco will remain as hosts for the tournament. Reports have suggested Morocco could withdraw after staging the previous two editions, while South Africa is reportedly considering stepping in as an alternative host. However, CAF have not confirmed any of those claims, leaving participating nations uncertain about where the competition will ultimately take place. Plumptre emphasised that the 2026 edition carries added importance because it will serve as part of the qualification pathway for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup. "The last WAFCON wasn't less important because it wasn't qualification for a World Cup, but obviously this is a chance for teams to qualify for the World Cup," she said. The upcoming tournament will also be historic as it expands to 16 teams for the first time, creating more opportunities for nations to compete on the continental stage. "It's the first time the tournament will have 16 teams, all of which will want the chance to qualify for the World Cup," Plumptre added. "Many teams haven't even played at WAFCON before and have never had the opportunity to qualify for a World Cup." CAF said the postponement would allow both the governing body and the host nation more time to properly organise the competition. Nigeria women's national football team will enter the tournament as defending champions after winning their 10th continental title last year with a 3-2 victory over hosts Morocco in the final.
