March 06, (THEWILL) -- In a decisive step to tackle Nigeria's chronic power challenges, the Federal Government, on Friday, inaugurated an 11-member committee to oversee the incorporation of the Grid Asset Management Company Limited (GAMCO). The move is aimed at optimising stranded power, improving grid management, and modernising transmission across the country. The inauguration follows the Federal Executive Council's approval of GAMCO earlier this week, a move President Bola Tinubu described as a revolutionary step in the nation's electricity sector. Speaking on behalf of the President, the Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, said the committee is central to the realisation of the administration's vision for a reliable and efficient power sector. "The proposed establishment of GAMCO is one of the revolutionary steps taken by Mr President and this administration in the all-important power sector. We are here for the inauguration of the Committee on Grid Asset Management Company (GAMCO), which is basically to optimise and revolutionise power generation, and in particular, the grid and transmission sector", Gbajabiamila stated. The committee's mandate includes a comprehensive review of existing laws, regulations, and institutional frameworks governing Nigeria's electricity value chain. This includes assessing the implications of the Electricity Reform Laws (2025), evaluating ownership and contractual obligations of assets under the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) and National Integrated Power Project (NIPP), and identifying potential fiscal, financial, and regulatory issues. The committee is chaired by Gbajabiamila, with key members, including the Attorney-General of the Federation, Ministers of Power, Works, Finance, Communication and Digital Economy, Science, Technology and Innovation, Aviation and Aerospace Development, the Minister of State (Petroleum), the Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service, and energy expert, Professor Yemi Oke. Dr John Chidiebere Ezeamama, Permanent Secretary of the Cabinet Affairs Office, serves as the committee secretary. GAMCO will kick off its pilot phase along the Benin-Lagos transmission corridor, leveraging the Omotosho, Olorunsogo, and Ihovbor NIPP plants, with installed capacities of 513 MW, 754 MW, and 508 MW respectively. The initiative is expected to recover at least 1,600 MW within 18-24 months, alongside constructing a new high-capacity 330KV+ double-circuit transmission line along the corridor. The Federal Government will fully own GAMCO as a commercial entity under the Ministry of Finance Incorporated. The initiative is designed to unlock stranded power, improve electricity reliability, boost industrial productivity, safeguard jobs, and strengthen investor confidence -- all in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Tinubu administration. By addressing operational inefficiencies and transmission bottlenecks, GAMCO aims to transform underperforming national assets into dependable electricity supply, forming the foundation for long-term grid stabilisation and expansion.
