The troops of the Nigeria Army's 17 Brigade in Katsina have been warned against compromising with civilians during internal security operations. The Army reminded the troops of the need to strictly observe the Rules of Engagement. The Nigeria Army Headquarters, gave the warning in Katsina, during a regimental visit to the Brigade, by the Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM), Warrant Officer S.Y. Ibrahim, among other personnel. Ibrahim, while touring the Brigade's Area of Responsibility, also reiterated the apolitical nature of the Nigerian Army, warning soldiers against any involvement in partisan politics. He added that the visit aimed at engaging the troops in mentorship and professional guidance targeting and strengthening discipline and regimentation among them. According to him, the visit also formed part of the Nigerian Army's renewed effort to reinforce regimental standards and professionalism among troops across formations and units. He said that, "The visit is being undertaken at the directive of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, as part of an ongoing regimentation drive, aimed at strengthening the role of RSM in mentoring soldiers and upholding the Army's core values." The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that during an interactive session with troops, the visiting RSMs addressed a range of issues considered vital to operational effectiveness and professional conduct. Among the topics discussed were; responsible use of social media, proper conduct at military checkpoints and strict adherence to document security procedures. The delegation also emphasised the need for soldiers to uphold the warrior ethos and maintain a strong fighting spirit in the discharge of their duties. During the engagement, issues relating to pay and allowances, leave and pass procedures as well as protocols guiding cases of Absence Without Official Leave (AWOL), were discussed. The delegation also stressed the importance of protecting vulnerable members of military communities, particularly widows, while reaffirming the Nigerian Army's zero-tolerance policy on sexual exploitation and abuse during operations. Other issues highlighted included the need to avoid social vices such as betting and gambling, cultism, drug abuse and drunkenness, which they said could undermine discipline and professionalism within the force. They further highlighted the critical leadership role of Senior Non-Commissioned Officers in mentoring younger soldiers and sustaining discipline and regimental standards within their respective units. In his remarks, the Commander of the 17-Brigade, Brig.-Gen. Ishaya Ibrahim, commended the Chief of Army Staff for initiating the regimentation drive and acknowledged the important role played by RSMs in strengthening discipline within the Nigerian Army. He assured that the brigade would continue to uphold the directives and vision of the Chief of Army Staff while maintaining high standards of discipline and operational effectiveness.
