The suspect, a resident of Igbogbo in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State, was nabbed after the baby's mother reported the matter to the police. A 30-year-old man has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly selling his sister's one-month-old baby for N2million. The suspect, a resident of Igbogbo in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State, was nabbed after the baby's mother reported the matter to the police. He reportedly claimed the sale was necessary to raise money for their late mother's burial expenses. Meanwhile, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, has ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, for thorough investigation and prosecution. When paraded before journalists on Friday, the suspect admitted to selling the baby, blaming it squarely on poverty and financial hardship. "Poverty pushed me into doing it. My sister initially agreed to the arrangement," he told newsmen. He narrated how he connected with the buyer through Facebook and arranged the handover at Mile 2 area. He claimed he went to the location with his sister, where a man sent by the buyer collected the infant, and the woman promptly transferred N2 million into his bank account. The suspect further disclosed that he gave his sister N500,000 from the proceeds, while the balance was used to organise their mother's burial. However, trouble started after the burial when his sister allegedly began demanding the baby's return, accusing him of using charms to manipulate her into consenting to the sale. "My sister later claimed she was unaware that the baby had been sold and reported the matter to the police, which led to my arrest," he said. He insisted he had no personal knowledge of the buyer beyond their online communication and the phone number used for the transaction, adding that efforts to reach her afterward had failed. Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of SCID, Dayo Akinbisehin, confirmed that investigations are ongoing. He assured that the suspect would be arraigned in court as soon as the probe is concluded. The incident comes against the backdrop of rising cases of child trafficking and sales across Nigeria, often driven by extreme poverty, where desperate individuals commodify even their own flesh and blood in the struggle to survive.
