SaharaReporters learnt that the attack occurred in Sambisa Forest, a notorious stronghold of Boko Haram in Borno State. Several Nigerian soldiers were killed and others injured in Borno State after militants from the Islamic State-backed Boko Haram faction, known as the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), launched an ambush. SaharaReporters learnt that the attack occurred in Sambisa Forest, a notorious stronghold of Boko Haram in Borno State. For years, the forest has provided the insurgents with a secure base to plan and execute operations. The militants have exploited the difficult terrain to establish training camps, detention centers, and operational bases, using its resources to sustain their campaign of violence. Sambisa has also reportedly served as a holding ground for abducted civilians, most notably the Chibok schoolgirls kidnapped in 2014, underscoring its role as a hub of insurgent activity in Nigeria's northeast. In a video seen by SaharaReporters, lifeless bodies of some personnel attached to 21 Special Armor Brigade killed during the ambush were seen. Some wounded soldiers in the video were also receiving treatment as their colleagues held IV fluids for them. SaharaReporters gathered that the soldiers were on patrol to clear some Boko Haram elements in the area following a credible intelligence when they were ambushed by the group. "These are Nigerian soldiers that were attacked by terrorists this early morning in Sambisa. Troops of the 21 Special Armor Brigade on clearance operations in Sambisa Forest were ambushed around 6:45 am this morning," a source said. Both security agents and civilians have suffered several attacks at the hands of terrorists in Borno in recent times. Boko Haram and its offshoot, Islamic State West Africa Province, have killed thousands and displaced millions in northeastern Nigeria. In the past months, soldiers have been targeted by the insurgents. Between 10 pm on Thursday night and 3 am on Friday, the terrorists simultaneously attacked four military bases in Konduga, Mainok, Jakana, and Marte town in Borno State. They reportedly fired at the military facilities sporadically, causing numerous casualties. The gunmen also came in different groups and could not be counted. During the attacks, the gunmen reportedly burned armoured tanks, military vehicles, and made away with unquantifiable ammunition. According to sources, the military also killed scores of Boko Haram terrorists while repelling the attacks. This incident came less than 24 hours after Boko Haram insurgents killed an unspecified number of civilians and abducted several women after launching an attack on a military post in Ngoshe community in Gwoza Local Government Area of the state. SaharaReporters had exclusively reported how the terrorists first stormed the military base before unleashing violence on residents at about 1am on Wednesday. The militants invaded the 82 Div TF Battalion under 26 BDE, and also launched an assault on a camp for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the community. Earlier in the month, many soldiers, including a Major, Ibrahim Mairiga, were killed in an attack on the Forward Base operations at Banki junction, along Bama/Gwaza Road in the state. In February, another military base in Jakana, Kaga Local Government Area of Borno State, was attacked. During the assault, the gunmen burnt armoured tanks and military vehicles and made away with unquantifiable ammunition. A few days before the attack, seven military personnel, including a newly promoted Lieutenant Colonel, were killed in an ambush by the terrorists. SaharaReporters had reported that Lieutenant Colonel Mohammed was leading a troop of soldiers from Maiduguri to Damasak, Mobbar Local Government Area of Borno State, when they came under attack by the insurgents on Monday, January 26, 2025. Military sources said the terrorists used explosives and heavy gunfire. Apart from the dead bodies recovered, many other soldiers were seriously injured.
