The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised recent comments by Senate President Godswill Akpabio regarding opposition reactions to the Electoral Act 2026. Akpabio had reportedly spoken during a reception held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, for the wife of the President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, where he suggested that criticism from opposition parties over the law indicated that the National Assembly had taken the right decision. Reacting in a statement on Sunday in Abuja, the National Publicity Secretary of the ADC, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, said opposition parties raise concerns not for political convenience but out of a responsibility to safeguard democratic standards. According to the party, certain provisions introduced in the amended electoral law could have implications for Nigeria's democratic process and deserve broader public scrutiny. The ADC noted that amendments to existing laws should aim to strengthen democratic institutions and reflect the collective interest of citizens. The party also expressed concern over a provision in the Electoral Act 2026 which it said may affect the grounds on which election outcomes can be challenged in court. It argued that the issue raises questions about possible inconsistencies with relevant sections of the Nigerian Constitution that outline conditions for eligibility to hold public office. The party called for careful consideration of the implications of the amendment, noting that electoral legislation should reinforce accountability, transparency and public confidence in the electoral process. According to the ADC, the debate surrounding the Electoral Act highlights the importance of ensuring that Nigeria's legal framework for elections remains consistent with constitutional provisions and democratic norms. The party maintained that while differing views are expected in a democracy, constructive engagement between the ruling party and opposition groups is essential to strengthening governance. It also reaffirmed its commitment to contributing to democratic development and presenting policy alternatives aimed at promoting accountability, integrity and effective leadership.
