The interim national chairman of Labour Party (LP), Senator Nenadi Usman, has called for stronger legislative and policy measures to promote gender equality and open more opportunities for women to contribute meaningfully to governance. Senator Usman made this remark in a message to mark the 2026 International Women Day observed on Sunday. The Labour Party's interim national chairman also urged lawmakers and policymakers to take stronger steps toward increasing women's participation in leadership and decision-making. According to her, "the annual observance of International Women's Day should serve as a reminder of the need to break barriers that still limit women's participation in leadership and decision-making." International Women's Day is celebrated globally each year to recognize the achievements of women and to push for greater gender equality and empowerment. While extending her warm wishes to women across the world, with special recognition for Nigerian women whom she described as resilient and hardworking despite the many challenges they face, the former senator noted that empowering women and giving them a stronger voice in governance remains essential for Nigeria's progress. According to her, the country can only achieve its full potential when women are fully represented and respected in all areas of national life. Usman, who has long advocated for women's rights and inclusion, said the call for better representation was one she pursued passionately during her time in the Senate. She urged lawmakers and policymakers to introduce stronger legislative and policy measures that will promote gender equality and open more opportunities for women to contribute meaningfully to governance.
