A political pressure group, The Handshake Movement (THM), has called on presidential aspirants on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to strictly adhere to democratic principles and party procedures as preparations begin for the 2027 general elections. Among those who have so far indicated interest in the ADC presidential ticket are Atiku Abubakar, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, and former Anambra State governor Peter Obi. In a statement issued at the weekend, THM National Secretary, Chinedu Okpalanma, said unity among the aspirants would be crucial to strengthening the ADC as a credible political alternative. According to the group, Nigeria is currently facing significant socio-economic challenges, including economic hardship, rising insecurity, unemployment and weakening institutions, which it said have contributed to declining public confidence in governance. The statement cautioned against the erosion of democratic norms, noting that democratic systems often weaken when political alternatives shrink, institutions are manipulated and opposition platforms become fragmented. THM noted that the ADC has begun to attract attention from Nigerians seeking credible political alternatives and urged aspirants to approach the race with patriotism and a strong sense of responsibility. "Personal ambition must never be allowed to fracture the very platform that millions of Nigerians now see as a possible vehicle for national renewal," the statement said. The group also emphasised that the ADC presidential primary should be conducted in a transparent and democratic manner capable of strengthening the party and producing a candidate acceptable to all stakeholders. In addition, THM advised Nigerians to avoid politics driven by ethnic or religious divisions, encouraging citizens instead to prioritise competence, integrity and leadership capacity. The movement further disclosed plans to hold consultations with aspirants on the ADC platform as part of efforts to encourage unity and build a broad democratic coalition ahead of the 2027 elections. It added that the group intends to contribute policy ideas, grassroots mobilisation and strategic engagement aimed at strengthening the ADC as a viable platform for national leadership.
