...commends Tinubu administration's efforts to boost women's participation in governance The Young Women's Renewed Hope Coalition (YWRHC) has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the rights, justice and empowerment of women and girls across Nigeria as the world marks the 2026 International Women's Day. In a statement issued on Sunday, the coalition said the global theme for this year's commemoration, "Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls," underscores the need for deliberate policies and actions that ensure equal opportunities and protect women's rights. According to a statement issued by its Director of Strategy and Public Affairs, Dr. Azeezat Yishawu, the group noted that while women's achievements and contributions continue to shape Nigeria's development, the focus must move beyond recognition to practical steps that guarantee justice, equality and access to opportunities for every woman and girl. "The theme is a powerful reminder that the advancement of women must go beyond recognition to ensuring the protection of rights, access to justice, and deliberate action that creates equal opportunities for every woman and girl," the statement said. The coalition acknowledged ongoing efforts by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to expand women's participation in governance and public life. According to the group, the appointment of women to leadership positions across ministries, federal agencies, advisory roles and diplomatic missions has helped amplify women's voices in national decision-making processes. "These steps contribute to ensuring that women's voices are represented in decision-making spaces and national development processes," the statement added. YWRHC also highlighted initiatives aimed at improving women's economic empowerment, particularly the Nigeria for Women Programme Scale-Up, which is designed to provide millions of Nigerian women with access to finance, skills development, markets and support networks. The coalition said programmes that strengthen women's economic participation are critical to enabling them build sustainable livelihoods, support their families and contribute meaningfully to the national economy. It, however, stressed the need to deepen efforts to strengthen access to justice for women and girls, particularly in tackling gender-based violence, discrimination and structural barriers that limit equal participation in society. "Protecting the rights of women requires strong institutions, responsive policies and sustained advocacy that ensure fairness and accountability across all sectors of society," the statement noted. Reaffirming its role as a platform for young women leaders, the coalition pledged to continue advocating policies that promote leadership development, expand opportunities for women and girls and support initiatives that advance their economic, social and political empowerment. The coalition also called on government institutions, civil society organisations, the private sector and community leaders to work together to ensure that every Nigerian woman and girl can live with dignity, exercise her rights and access justice. "Rights. Justice. Action. For all women and girls must be more than a theme; it must be a collective commitment," the statement added.
