The Maritime Workers' Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has hailed the resilience and contributions of women in the maritime industry and across the world, urging them to remain strong and continue playing critical roles in shaping society and the global economy. In a message to commemorate International Women's Day, the President-General of MWUN, Comrade Francis Bunu, described women as indispensable to human development and the stability of communities, while also acknowledging the growing role of women in the maritime labour ecosystem. Bunu, in a statement issued by the union's Head of Media, Comrade John Kennedy Ikemefuna, praised women as a vital force that sustains families, organisations and society at large. According to him, "women are the most precious gift the Almighty God has bestowed on the planet earth to make the world a beautiful place to reside." The maritime labour leader said the existence of women has helped create balance and meaning in human society, noting that life without women would lack purpose and fulfilment. "He said that the absence of women on this planet would have been very boring; hence, the Creator Himself recognised that the presence of women will bridge the gap to make life more enduring, meaningful, enjoyable and lovable," the statement said. Bunu further described women as a fundamental pillar of human existence, stressing that the continuity of mankind would not be possible without their presence. The MWUN PG also highlighted the important role women continue to play within the union and the broader maritime workforce, encouraging female members of the union to remain steadfast and confident in their contributions to the industry. "While greeting all the women across the world today, he also specifically made mention of his own women in the Maritime Workers' Union of Nigeria, urging them not to relent to be that strong woman they are all expected to be especially in the comity of women across the world, adding that he's always proud of them female Comrades," the statement added. Commemorated globally every March 8, International Women's Day celebrates the social, economic and political achievements of women while also highlighting the need to advance gender inclusion across sectors, including traditionally male-dominated industries such as maritime transport and port operations. Industry stakeholders have in recent years continued to advocate increased participation of women in maritime administration, shipping, port operations and maritime labour unions as part of broader efforts to deepen diversity and capacity within the sector.
