Across the world, conversations about gender inclusion in technology continue to gain urgency. Despite progress in digital innovation and global talent development, women remain significantly underrepresented in the technology workforce. Read also: Tech Trivia with Deborah Osagie, DevOps Engineer at Stanbic IBTC According to the World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap Report 2024, women account for only about 29% of the global technology workforce, underscoring the persistent gender gap in one of the world's fastest-growing industries. Yet, the same report notes that women's participation in emerging tech roles, particularly in areas such as data and artificial intelligence, has continued to grow steadily in recent years. In Nigeria, similar patterns are visible. A 2025 report by the Nigerian Startup Ecosystem Report and Disrupt Africa indicates that about 12% of startup founders in the country are women, despite the increasing number of female professionals contributing to engineering, product development, policy, and digital entrepreneurship across the ecosystem. From fintech and product management to cybersecurity and communications, women are steadily carving out influence and leadership in spaces historically dominated by men. In 2024, female CEOs in the African tech ecosystem received just 2% of the total funding, amounting to $48 million (excluding exits), as reported by Big Deal. These statistics highlight both the gap and the opportunity: while women remain underrepresented, their contributions are becoming increasingly visible across Africa's expanding digital economy. Through BuildHers Circle, Technext aims to deepen conversations around women's participation in technology while highlighting the contributions of women shaping Nigeria's digital future.
