The First Lady of Edo State, Anani Okpebholo , has called for increased investment in women empowerment and gender equality, stressing that both are essential for nation-building and sustainable development. This was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by the Public Relations Officer of the Office of the First Lady, Gloria Osemudiamhen, on the commemoration of International Women's Day. According to the statement, the event, themed "Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls," was held at Government House in Benin City. Addressing stakeholders, Mrs Okpebholo highlighted the vital role women play in shaping the future of the state and the country, while commending their resilience, determination and commitment to excellence. She said women and girls have continued to make invaluable contributions to the socio-economic development of Nigeria. "Women play a critical role in shaping the future of Edo State and Nigeria as a whole. "Their resilience, determination and unwavering commitment to excellence continue to contribute immensely to the socio-economic development of the state and the nation," the statement quoted her as saying. The First Lady stressed the need to promote justice, equality and decisive action in advancing the rights of women and girls. "There is a need to dismantle barriers to equal justice, including discriminatory laws, weak legal protections and harmful practices and social norms that undermine the rights of women and girls," she said. She also reaffirmed the commitment of the state government to creating opportunities that would strengthen economic independence, social inclusion and visibility for women across the state. According to her, empowering women remains both a moral responsibility and a strategic investment in national growth. "Empowering women is not only a moral obligation but also a strategic investment in the growth and prosperity of the nation," she added. Mrs Okpebholo therefore called on stakeholders to work together in promoting gender equality and advancing initiatives that empower women across the state. She noted that such collaboration would help drive sustainable development and build a society where women can thrive and reach their full potential while contributing to a more equitable and prosperous Nigeria.
