The Vice-Chancellor of David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences (DUFUHS), Uburu, Prof. Jesse Uneke, weekend revealed that the student population of the university has grown from 26 to 3,759 within a few years of its establishment. Prof. Uneke made this known on Saturday during the 5th matriculation ceremony of the institution in Uburu, Ohaozara local government area of Ebonyi state, where he welcomed newly admitted students and their parents to the university. The university admitted a total of 1,044 new students for the current academic session, comprising 361 males and 683 females. He explained that the university commenced full academic activities in January 2022 with just 26 students after it was enlisted on the admission portal of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board. According to him, the institution recorded a rapid increase in admission in its second year, leading to a steady rise in students' enrolment which has now reached 3,759. The Vice-Chancellor attributed the growth to the university's commitment to quality education, high academic standards and the availability of modern learning facilities. Uneke also appreciated the Visitor to the university and President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for reforms in the education sector, noting that the institution has benefitted from federal government interventions. He said the National Universities Commission approved six faculties and 19 departments for the university to run programmes including Medicine and Surgery, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing Science and Medical Laboratory Science. The Vice-Chancellor added that the university has digitalised most of its academic processes, including electronic verification of admission credentials and computer-based testing for examinations. He noted that the institution also operates a 100 percent on-campus residency policy to ensure proper monitoring of students and create a conducive learning environment. Prof. Uneke urged the newly matriculated students to remain disciplined and focused on their studies, stressing that the university places high priority on character development and academic excellence.
