The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared that it will field candidates for all elective offices in the 2027 general elections, insisting that the party remains united and has no factions despite recent internal disagreements. This is as the party launched an online membership registration drive in Abia State as part of efforts to rebuild its structures and strengthen grassroots mobilisation ahead of the next electoral cycle. Naija News reports that PDP leaders spoke on Saturday during a stakeholders' meeting in Umuahia, where Local Government Caretaker Committees were inaugurated, and the electronic membership registration exercise was formally unveiled. Speaking at the event, the PDP Deputy National Secretary, Richard Nnanna Ihediwa, alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was orchestrating attempts to destabilise the opposition party because it feared losing power in 2027. According to him, the PDP remains the only formidable political platform capable of unseating the APC at the national level. "Nigerians should know that the APC is not an option in 2027," he said. "The reason they are fighting the PDP is because they know we are the only party capable of salvaging Nigeria from their grip." Ihediwa claimed that the ruling party had deployed political moles to deepen the PDP's internal crisis but insisted that the leadership dispute had been effectively resolved following the emergence of the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee during the party's convention in Ibadan in November 2025. He added that the PDP remained confident that ongoing litigations regarding the leadership tussle would ultimately be resolved in favour of the current leadership. "We have faith in the judiciary and expect a favourable judgment," he said. "The court cannot tell you who your father is. We know our father. Our convention was held in Ibadan and our leadership emerged from there." Ihediwa also predicted that the APC would perform poorly in the South-East during the 2027 elections, alleging that the region remained dissatisfied with the Federal Government. He specifically referenced the continued detention of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu. "APC has failed Nigeria, and we have suffered enough, especially in the South-East," he said. "A government that jailed your son and kept him far away from you should not expect your support." The PDP chieftain further accused the Federal Government of economic mismanagement, arguing that its policies had worsened the economic hardship faced by Nigerians. He also alleged that some party members had attempted to sabotage the PDP's rebuilding efforts for personal gains. "Some moles wanted to sell the PDP because of money and parcels of land in Abuja," he claimed. Despite the challenges, he commended the PDP Governors' Forum, the party's elders, and the Board of Trustees for resisting attempts to hijack the party. "PDP is back on its winning track. We cannot be stopped," he declared. Earlier, the Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees and former Senate President, Adolphus Wabara, formally launched the party's online membership registration campaign in Abia State. Wabara urged party supporters to participate actively in the exercise, saying the PDP had been repositioned to regain political dominance. Overwhelmed by the large turnout of members at the event, the former Senate President declared that the party remained resilient. "The PDP can never die," he said. Wabara commended the Abia PDP Caretaker Committee Chairman, Hon. Ikpegbu Emeka-Yellow, for demonstrating strong leadership within a short time in office. However, he cautioned the new leadership against practising godfatherism, stressing the need for fairness and transparency in party affairs. "People will be attracted to the PDP when they see that transparency and due process are valued instead of impunity and imposition which weakened the party in the past," Wabara said. He also called on members who left the party during its internal crisis to return and help rebuild the organisation. In his remarks, the Abia PDP Caretaker Committee Chairman, Hon. Emeka-Yellow, described the inauguration of Local Government Caretaker Committees as a critical step towards rebuilding the party's grassroots structures. "The task before you is clear: rebuild our structures at the grassroots, mobilise our members, reconnect with our supporters and restore public confidence in our great party," he said. He acknowledged that the PDP in Abia had previously faced internal challenges that weakened its political structures but insisted that the party had now turned a new page. According to him, the party would soon begin an aggressive membership drive across the state. "This is the time to heal old wounds, rebuild trust and reunite our party," he said. However, Emeka-Yellow warned that the party would no longer tolerate sabotage or members working against its interests. "The era of sabotage must end. The PDP remains a home for loyal and committed democrats ready to work for the growth and success of the party," he added. Meanwhile, a former Commissioner for Housing in Abia State, Barrister James Opara, criticised the APC and dismissed the City Boy Movement, a support group of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He described the group as "a movement of jobless people." Opara also questioned provisions of the current Electoral Act, particularly the absence of mandatory real-time electronic transmission of election results, which he said could undermine confidence in the electoral process. He further insisted that the outcome of the Ibadan PDP Convention remained valid because the notice convening the convention was properly endorsed by the party's then National Chairman and National Secretary as required by law. Other speakers at the meeting, including former lawmaker Hon. Emeka Ejiogu and Hon. Tamuna Iyala, expressed optimism that the PDP was regaining strength in Abia State. They pledged their support for the caretaker committee and expressed confidence that the party would reclaim lost political ground in the 2027 elections.
