War with Iran spells trouble

In 2016 and 2024, President Donald Trump relied heavily on promises to end America's wars and avoid costly overseas interventions. Since taking office in 2025, Trump has bombed seven countries including Iraq, Venezuela, Nigeria, Syria, Iran, Yemen and Somalia. And Feb. 27, during ongoing negotiations, the U.S. and Israel again attacked Iran in what appears to be an unprovoked violation of international law. The U.S. and Israel have managed to make themselves international pariahs. Saudi Arabia condemned the massive assault and in the U.S., polls have shown support for military intervention in Iran at only 20%. Throughout the world, few countries have called for a military campaign to overthrow the Islamic Republic, and for good reason. There is little prospect for success, and the complexities and costs of such an attack risk the creation of a broader regional conflict. Regime change is not an ordinary military operation, and, can lead to chaos, civil war and other unintended consequences. It can also trigger a nationalistic backlash, making the public more supportive of the regime in the short run. Iran is nearly 2 1/2 times the size of Texas and has a population of more than 90 million. And nearly 80% of the country consists of difficult, rugged mountain terrain, which should make any country think twice about a ground invasion. This war does not have the support of our allies or the American people. And it will not be cheap, swift or decisive. Some wars are simply too costly to fight.
