ONITSHA - The African Action Congress (AAC) in Anambra State, alongside a non-governmental organisation, Alexander Grave Foundations, has unveiled a Train-Up-A-Child tour of facilities in secondary schools across the State. At its official unveiling of the tour, with the theme, 'Train Up a Child,' the National Deputy Chairperson of AAC, Lady Chioma Ifemeludike bemoaned what she contended is lip-service being paid to free education in the State. According to her, the theme is apt and reflects "our commitment to early mentorship, guidance, and the deliberate nurturing of future leaders who will contribute positively to their communities and Nigeria at large." The initiator of the Secondary Schools Tour said the move was informed by absence of facilities in many schools she visited including Community Secondary School at Ezi-Owelle in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State where she claimed there exists no fence around the school, parents, teachers and students live in fear because of atmosphere of insecurity occasioning the unwholesome activities of some criminal herders. Ifemeludike noted that the unveiling marks the commencement of the tour of schools across the State as part of students' mentorship and education development programmes. The programme initiator hinted that the school tour is occasioned by the urgent need to train a child to be academically sound, good in character, morally upright and disciplined. Ifemeludike, who was the Party's governorship candidate in the just-concluded November 8, 2025 election revealed: "This initiative is designed to engage secondary school students across Anambra State in meaningful conversations around leadership, character development, civic responsibility, academic excellence, and nation-building. "The programme seeks to inspire young people to embrace discipline, integrity, and social consciousness as foundational values for personal and societal growth." "The purpose of the State-wide tour," she disclosed includes "to promote value-based education and moral development, encourage responsible citizenship among students, provide mentorship and motivational engagement and foster leadership consciousness from an early age." Ifemeludike explained that the unveiling ceremony is an important step toward building a responsible and empowered generation. She added that the mentorship programme targets members of the public stakeholders in education, youth-advocacy groups, civil society organisations, and the media among others, adding: "Together, we can shape the future by investing in our children today." Contributing, a stakeholder in AAC, Princess Adaeze Nnabuike called on the state government to step up efforts to ensure that children that loiter around the neighbourhoods, streets and markets during school hours are returned to school. Nnabuike lamented that failure to give these children and wards good education has negative consequences not only the children, personally, but the country at large. The children, she noted, are the LL waders of tomorrow, and if they aren't given adequate support to pursue education, participate in decision making and contribute to nation building.
